Cochrane brews supporting Symons Valley Ranch vendors

Taps at Cochrane’s Half Hitch Brewing Company and Jamesons Irish Pubs are flowing in support of vendors affected by the fire that destroyed the historic Symons Valley Ranch Jan. 26.
With Half Hitch on tap at its two locations in Calgary, Jamesons Irish Pubs approached the brewery with a proposal to donate $1 of every pint sold in February, according to Half Hitch president Chris Heier.
“(This fire) is a huge interruption to the (vendors),” he said. “For a lot of those people, it is a loss of livelihood.
“We wanted to try and do what we can.”
After opening the doors to the restaurant side of its brewery Jan. 21, Half Hitch took the fundraiser a step further, Heier said, by also donating $1 for every pint of its three beers sold throughout the month of February.
As a family owned and operated business, Half Hitch is focused on supporting local, he said.
What is considered local, however, goes beyond the borders of Cochrane, Heier said, and well into the regions of Rocky View County, Calgary and Bow Valley.
“We consider them all our friends,” he said. “(Half Hitch is) a family of good people. A family of people who care.”
Knowing many vendors had lost their ability to support their families following the fire, Jamesons Irish Pubs wanted to help, said marketing director Cathy McDonald.
A huge strength of Calgary and its surrounding area is its ability to band together to help those in need, she said.
“At the end of the day, we support local,” McDonald said. “When we saw local vendors and local farmers themselves being affected, we wanted to step in and help out as much as we could.”
She approached Half Hitch Brewing Company, Village Brewery, Wild Rose Brewery and Big Rock Brewery with the $1 pint proposal.
All four responded wonderfully, McDonald said, showing full support for the campaign.
Half Hitch’s determination to take the fundraiser further was also a pleasant surprise, she said.
“I think it’s an amazing initiative (from Half Hitch) for sure,” McDonald said. “These vendors are definitely extremely deserving.”
A brew of support for vendors rebuilding after the Symons Valley Ranch can be purchased at Jamesons Irish Pubs Brentwood or 17th Avenue locations in Calgary or at Half Hitch Brewing Company, 10 Griffin Industrial Point, in Cochrane.
