Cochrane Humane Society seeking participants for annual fundraiser

Dog lovers take note: registration is open for the Cochrane Animal Care Clinic and Cochrane and Area Humane Society’s (CAHS) 11th annual Mutt Strut, to take place Sept. 8 in Cochrane’s Mitford Park.

The event to take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will raise money for shelter, food and medical treatment for animals at the CAHS.

“We guarantee that you will have a good time and we guarantee the money will help the animals,” said Cheryl Wallach of the CAHS. “It’s one of our more family-fun oriented fundraisers. You come out and bring your dog with you.”

The event includes a five-kilometre walk with a turnaround point for families with older or less mobile dogs. Walkers gather pledges to earn money for the animals.

The event will include a marketplace filled with pet-related vendors and activities.

There will also be a doggie talent show, fashion show, pet portraits and refreshments.

The top fundraiser will win a trip for four to Disneyland. Other fundraising prizes include a Calgary Flames night out and an adventure for two with Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours.

According to Wallach, last year the event raised more than $26,000 for the CAHS.

“This year, we want to increase that to at least $36,000,” said Wallach.

The CAHS is a non-profit society that assists about 1,100 animals each year, the majority of which are dogs and cats, in and around Cochrane. The organization relies heavily on its volunteers and has about 200 of them who actively participate.

Those interested in participating in the Mutt Strut can register online at www.cochranehumane.ca

Participants can customize their own webpage, link it to Facebook and start gathering pledges right away.
