Local youth crowned Sundre Rodeo Princess
Airdrie’s Mackenzie Henn was crowned as the Sundre Rodeo Princess, June 22, and will be spending her year with local Queen Cayley Martyn.
Henn ran against five other contestants in the junior pageant in Sundre including Alyssa Worbetz, from the Bergen area; Breanna Macklin; Taylor Grass and Katie Schenk from Sundre.
“It was overwhelming. Everyone was coming up to me, and I didn’t know what to do,” said Henn.
“It was a lot of fun.”
The pageant started on March 18, and ran until crowning day on June 22. Henn said her favourite event was the fashion show and working with the five other girls was a lot of fun.
“Everyone was really easy to get along with,” said Henn.
“It was sad to see them go. I am looking forward to the next year with Cayley.”
Henn said she is excited to promote the rodeo in Sundre.
“I hear Ponoka is a hoot, so I am excited for next week,” said Henn.
As for the 100th Calgary Stampede, Henn and Martyn will be riding in the parade and taking part in a number of pancake breakfast events, but will be excluded from the visiting royalty day after the Stampede raised its minimum age for the event.
Henn, 16, hopes to gain experience through Sundre, and run for the Airdrie Pro Rodeo Royalty when she is 19 years old.
“I am just working on finishing school. Once I am 19, I want to run for Airdrie, and once I am done that I want to run for Canada or Calgary.”
