Cobras nearly double Chargers during rout at Bert Church

Jan 23, 2012 06:00 am | By Nick Kuhl | Rocky View Weekly

The Cochrane Cobras didn’t show any signs of rust during a 101-55 win over the Chargers at Bert Church High School in Airdrie, Jan. 14.

The team hadn’t played a game since a tournament in Hawaii before Christmas, so head coach Jim Forrest said he was happy about the result.

“It was important for us to get out to a good start today,” he said. “I was glad to get a game in and it was a good performance for us.”

Cochrane’s Cooper Hamaliuk had a game-high 40 points, including 23 in the first quarter, while Kellen Forrest added 22. Bert Church Grade 12 student Robert Horne led the Chargers with 19 points.

The Cobras’ record in the Rocky View Sports Association season is now 3W-1L. The lone loss was at home to the provincially No. 1-ranked Chestermere Lakers, who sit at 3W-0L.

Bert Church drops to 1W-3L, Springbank sits at 1W-1L and George McDougall is 0W-3L.

Against the Chargers, who lost to Chestermere less than 36 hours before hosting Cochrane, the Cobras were able to build up a 57-26 lead at the half. Them team didn’t relent in the second half.

“That’s two really tough games right in a row for them,” Forrest said.

“But we usually really struggle in this gym, because Bert Church plays really well here. So, coming out this win should serve well for our confidence.”

“The biggest thing we said before this game is ‘we want you to work hard for 40 minutes,’” said Chargers’ head coach Mike Sera. “We didn’t do that today.”

Teams have a two-week break due to provincial diploma exams, so Cochrane’s next game will be a visit to Chestermere on Jan. 31. Tip off is at 7:45 p.m.

Bert Church’s next game will be against cross-town rival George McDougall at the same time and date, while Springbank has a bye until Feb. 7, when it will host the Cobras.

“Our next game is against Chestermere, who are No. 1 in the province right now, so our challenge is going to be able to compete against them,” Forrest said.
