Boys and Girls Club to offer programs in Crossfield and Beiseker

The Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie is expanding into Beiseker and Crossfield.

The Torch Program will be available for children between the ages of 10 and 13 in both communities.

The Keystone Program will be offered to students ages 14 to 18 in each location.

The programs will be held in W.G. Murdoch School in Crossfield on Wednesdays and Thursdays and Beiseker Community School on Mondays.

“We have seen a big need and a big opportunity for us to bring programs to some of the rural areas where they haven’t been offered before,” said Kacie Dougherty, manager of youth services with the Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie.

“We have been looking to expand into the rural areas and we love to fulfil the needs of youth in those communities.”

The Torch and Keystone programs teach students leadership, how to make healthy choices, learn teamwork and improve social responsibility.

“We have a big focus on giving back to the community,” said Dougherty.

She said students take part in activities like paintball, skating, walk-a-thons and picking up garbage.

They also have movie nights, play sports and talk about what is going on in their lives with leaders. Boys and Girls Club members volunteer at a number of local events such as the Airdrie Festival of Lights and Airdrie Fest.

“Everything is geared towards the students interests,” said Dougherty.

“They get to have a lot of fun and learn many different skills. We try and prepare them for adulthood and gear the program towards their needs so they are interested in what they are doing and want to come back time after time.”

She said students make new friends, build self-esteem, take chances and try new things.

“When I ask the kids what they liked best about the programs, they say it is the fact that they are like one big family,” said Dougherty.

The programs cost $10 per teen per year. For more information, visit www.bgcairdrie.com or call 403-948-3331.
