Local boxing club prepares inaugural bouts

Airdrie’s Boss Boxing is preparing to host its inaugural amateur boxing card, featuring some of Alberta’s top fighters, at the Town and Country Centre, March 12.

Dubbed the Boss Brawl, the event will feature 12 local boxers in the more than 20 bouts scheduled for the evening, as well as fighters from Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Fort McMurray, Olds and Okotoks.

Boss Boxing’s Brad Lescard will compete in the co-main event against Calgary’s Robin Johnson, while provincial champion Darren Orubor, also from Calgary, will be challenged by Red Deer’s Brian Samuels in the other co-main event.

“Come on out to this event to help support the fighters, give back to the community and welcome the first and definitely not last amateur boxing fight night in Airdrie,” said Rhys Eckardt, Boss Boxing coach and event organizer. “The Boss Brawl is a great opportunity for amateur boxers out of Airdrie to showcase their talents in front of a home crowd and show the province what the city has to offer.”

Lescard, a 39-year-old with seven fights to his credit, will be joined by fellow Airdrie boxers Jesse Foster, Angelo Addante, Adam Stackard, Lee Popp, Brenden McKenna, Dallas Davies, Jon LaGreca, Taylor Piquette, Joriel Lewis and Jared Stirling.

“Airdrie can keep up, if not dominate the rest of the clubs out there,” Eckardt. “This is a small city with a lot of talent. We’ve been open for two years now, and we’ll be competing against gyms that have been out there for over a decade.”

An up-to-date fight card will be available at www.bossboxing.ca, or by searching Boss Boxing on Facebook. Tickets for the event, which begins at 6 p.m. March 12, can be purchased at the gym.
