Police Notebook: Couple killed on Highway 8, baby in stable condition
The parents of a seven-week-old baby were killed in a head-on collision near Cochrane, Aug. 20.
Twenty-six-year-old Michael Melnyk and his 22-year-old wife Merin Cherie Melnyk were killed when their Mercedes crossed into the oncoming lane and hit a full-sized GMC pick-up truck on Aug. 20 at about 8:40 p.m. on Highway 8, south of Cochrane
The baby girl was transported to hospital with serious injuries. She is now in serious, but stable condition. The 54-year-old driver of the westbound vehicle is also in serious but stable condition.
Police say Melnyk was not trying to pass another vehicle and are looking at other causes of the crash such as driver distraction.
The investigation is ongoing, however, it is not believed that drugs, alcohol or speed were contributing factors in the collision.
Motorcycle hits truck
On Aug. 18 at about 8:50 p.m., Cochrane RCMP responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a motorcycle and semi truck on Highway 1 at Scott Lake Hill.
Investigation revealed both vehicles were travelling eastbound when the collision occurred.
The motorcycle driver ran into the back of the semi and flipped off his bike, landing on the rear fender of the trailer.
The semi drove for about half a kilometre before being alerted by another motorist that the driver of the motorcycle was laying on his trailer fender.
The driver of the motorcycle, a 37-year-old man from Calgary, was transported to a Calgary hospital suffering from serious and potentially life-threatening injuries.
The collision is still under investigation.
Break and enter
A Chestermere home on West Creek Drive was broken into over the course of the week of Aug. 16.
Suspects gained entry through the front door and various electronics were stolen.
The homeowner was not present at the time of the burglary and no one was injured.

Anyone else noticed how traffic accidents have increased since the corruption of our Emergency Services Mangement decided to eliminate all of our County Traffic Officers in order to save their own butts? I hope the families and victims involved sue the County!
